Two Indians Arrested For Illegally Sand Mining In Goa

Mapusa: Cracking down on illegal sand mining, a team led by Bardez mamlatdar Dasharath Gawas that included police men seized 08.5 cu m of illegally extracted sand from the Chapora river at Pirna   and arrested two people. Gawas and assistant mines geologist Shyam Sawant, officials from captain of ports and Colvale police personnel conducted the raid around 5 a.m. at Chapora river at Pirna. The police arrested two labourers – Dadan Sahani (50) and Ajay Sahani (42),  both natives of Uttar Pradesh.
 
Canoes with illegally extracted sand (08.5 cu m) were seized. Sub-divisional police officer, Mapusa, Jivba Dalvi said that an offence was registered under Section 379 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Rules 3, 38 and 62(1) of the Goa Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1985, and both accused were arrested.
 
Similar raid was conducted at Naibag by a team led by Pernem mamlatdar Anant Malik, where four canoes were seized with 30 cu m of sand extracted from the Tiracol river. The raiding team seized four canoes which were found in the river and handed over to the coastal police for further action. The team, which included Talathi Bhanudas Kalangutkar and Pernem police personnel, also seized 30 cu m of sand stacked and dumped along the riverbank.
