Mapusa: The Calangute panchayat has imposed a fine of `25,000 on a hotelier for disposing of garbage on the roadside opposite a petrol pump located in the village. According to information available, the garbage contractor alerted the panchayat about garbage being dumped by a person opposite the old petrol pump in Calangute.

 

Accordingly, the panchayat summoned the hotelier in question. Subsequently, the area was cleaned off by the hotelier’s staff and a fine of `25,000 was imposed. Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said that the panchayat has been spending `15 lakh per month for garbage collection in its jurisdiction and appealed to the residents to cooperate and hand over garbage to the workers who come at the doorstep. “We want to make the village garbage-free and I request everyone, including hoteliers, not to dump garbage on the roadside. Call us and our worker will come to collect garbage at your house,” Sequeira stated.
